Hacettepe University Tobacco Control, Training, Implementation and Research Center was established as of the Official Gazette No: 28239 of June 20, 2012.

The aim of the center is to prevent the use of tobacco and tobacco products in cooperation with relevant academic units and departments of the university, to determine policies against the use of tobacco, to plan formal and non-formal educations regarding the damages of tobacco, and to enable the region- and country-wide control of tobacco by monitoring the use of tobacco and its effects on health.

Areas of Activity

The center’s areas of activity are as follows:

a) Preventing the use of tobacco and tobacco products, and the children to start using these substances,

b) Creating relevant legislation and contributing to the determination of policies regarding the prevention of taxation and trafficking of tobacco and tobacco products, the changing of the perception towards tobacco products, and the prevention of workers to be subjected to smoke,

c) Planning all the activities to be conducted with the aim of a non-smoking society in order to inform senior national and international shareholders and the individuals and to spread tobacco control activities, making strategies and supporting the ongoing activities,

d) Enabling the creation of data recording and monitoring systems necessary to record and monitor the country-wide use of tobacco according to international standards,

e) Organizing education and certificate programs regarding the prevention of the use of tobacco, tobacco control and other fields where necessary, and electronic education programs towards the interests of every age group which can be accessed online within and outside the campus when necessary,

f) Organizing activities that will improve the control of tobacco in order to inform the people and the scientific environments on a regular basis, and making publications such as books, journals, leaflets, etc.,

g) Conducting other activities suggested by the Rector’s Office or other units, and/or determined by the Board of Directors,

h) Increasing the importance attached on tobacco control in graduate and undergraduate education programs in cooperation with in-house or other academic units, and enabling the opening of training programs for specialists, instructors and academics regarding tobacco control when occasion serves,

i) Conducting necessary studies in order to make Hacettepe University a non-smoking area,

j) Planning and applying any comprehensive and multi-disciplinary scientific researches in order to improve and develop relevant activities.
